Biography
J.
William Davis has experience as a theatre designer, architect and commercial
artist. Originally from the United States, he now lives and works in London.
He graduated with a a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University having
studied in New York and Florence. His post graduate studies in Theatre Design
include the Motley Theatre Design Course and an intensive short RADA training
session.
J. William Davis has designed sets and costumes for a range of different scale
and type of productions. These include small casts in intimate spaces such
as Six Characters in Search of an Author at the Donmar Warehouse as well as
operas, plays and musicals for larger venues including Death in Venice for
Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Antony and Cleopatra at the Aldwych and Anyone
Can Whistle at the Roundhouse. I have also worked on site specific and touring
productions such as Godspell for performance in various Chicago city parks.
He assisted the scenic designer Peter J. Davison on a stage production of Disney's Aladdin in Los Angeles by producing CAD technical drawings. He worked with the scenic and architectural designer Mark Fisher to develop concepts for the Muse Ship, a floating entertainment, cultural and educational multimedia experience. In NYC he built sets for the WPA Theatre and produced drawings for the Wooster Group. He as the designer for the final exhibition of the 2005 Motley Theatre Design Course held at the National Theatre Studio in London.
J. William Davis successfully competed to produce the winning design for a stained glass window for Equity theatre union's 75h anniversary. He headed the design teams for two competition entries, for LIFT and OISTAT, for temporary theatre spaces. The London International Festival of Theatre New Parliament is a movable space designed to be contained and formed from recycled shipping containers. The Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architectes de Théâtre structure is also transportable and is to be constructed from a disused ship; it can be docked at quaysides at cities around the globe.
As
an architect he has designed many large scale entertainment, leisure, sports,
residential, office, retail, transportation and urban redevelopment schemes
throughout Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
In his own consultancy, xalapeñosDESIGNS
J. William Davis
creates corporate identity packages, logos, website, presentations, products
deigns, graphics and signage. He has acted as the editor for two monographs
for KPF architects.
